Academic Integrity- What Constitutes Cheating?

The public is invited to attend a talk by Dr. Tricia Bertram Gallant, Chair of the Advisory Council of the International Center for Academic Integrity, on the topic of academic cheating on April 8, noon to 2 p.m. in the Cosumnes River College Recital Hall.

The talk, titled “But I’m a good person!” and other misconceptions about academic cheating: Rethinking academic integrity as professional integrity,” will look at how the popular conception of academic cheating as an act of moral depravity has not been effective at reducing misconduct on our college and university campuses. Dr. Gallant redefines academic integrity as a form of professional integrity, and will review the factors that move all of us away from performing our roles with integrity, and calls to action those students, faculty, staff, and administrators who long for new ways to act with, develop, and encourage, professional integrity.

The talk is sponsored by Cosumnes River College and the Sacramento State University Center for Practical and Professional Ethics. For more information, please contact CRC Philosophy Professor and Chair of the Academic Integrity Committee Rick Schubert at schubert@crc.losrios.edu.

Human Trafficking Awareness Seminar Today at Sac State

Sacramento State is hosting a seminar about a serious international issue- human trafficking.
It’s still going on right now from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. I’m not sure if you can just “pop in,” because it is $30 for general admission and $10 for students, but you might want to stop by if you’re on campus.
The event, “Hidden in Plain Sight: Human Trafficking in the Central Valley,” hosts speakers from the FBI and the San Jose Police Department. The founding executive of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery & Trafficking will be in attendance too.
It’s being held in the University Union Ballroom.

Arf! Arf! It's National Pet Sitters Week

If it were up to Fido and Fluffy, National Pet Sitters Week would be once a month.
Pet Sitters International named March 7-13 National Pet Sitters week in honor of those who scoop the poop and care for our precious pets during the day.
Karla Green is a local pet sitter and owner of Karla's Pet Care in Elk Grove.
Karla encourages pet owners and pet lovers alike to celebrate Professional Pet Sitters Week. This international campaign seeks to educate pet owners about the advantages of in-home pet care, as well as to encourage the public to explore professional pet sitting as a viable and rewarding career opportunity, Green wrote.
Despite a slowing economy the demand for professional pet-care services remains high. Since 1994 PSI’s membership has grown to nearly 8,000 independent professional pet-sitting businesses with an average of 191 clients each. These sitters service more than 1.5 million clients and deliver more than 17.4 million pet-sitting engagements per year.
"I am continually striving to provide the best quality service to our pet-owning clients. It’s important to see the industry I love recognized on a global scale,” Green adds.

KATIE: IN SPAAAACCCE

On Wednesday, March 3, I attended the 3rd Annual Math and Science Discovery Night at Edward Harris Jr., Middle School.
The NASA Explorer Schools program sponsored the event, so naturally people from NASA were there- specifically one person from the NASA Ames Research Center in the Bay Area, Alicia Baturoni Cortez.
She had a laptop where visitors could fill out their name and address to be recorded on a chip and sent into space for The Glory Mission that launches in late 2010.
I received an e-mail the next day saying I would be part of the “Send Your Name Around The Earth” program.
How exciting! I may never get to go into space, but at least my name will!!

To read more about The Glory Mission visit http://glory.gsfc.nasa.gov/

It’s actually pretty cool, even without the sending names into space part.

Alice in Wonderland at IMAX

On March 5, 2010 moviegoers will be lining up to experience Alice in Wonderland in IMAX 3D at the Esquire IMAX Theatre.
Through the power of IMAX 3D, audiences will fall down the rabbit hole with Alice, join the Mad Hatter’s tea party and be completely immersed in the fantastical world of Tim Burton’s Wonderland.
Digitally re-mastered into IMAX quality the IMAX Alive in Wonderland will debut concurrently with the nationwide theatrical release from Walt Disney Pictures.

Alice in Wonderland marks the second Tim Burton and Johnny Depp collaboration to be re-mastered for an IMAX release following the 2005 release of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

From Walt Disney Pictures and visionary director Tim Burton comes an epic 3D fantasy adventure, Alice in Wonderland, a magical and imaginative twist on some of the most beloved stories of all time. Johnny Depp stars as the Mad Hatter and Mia Wasikowska as 19-year-old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Chesire Cat and, of course, the Mad Hatter. Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and end the Red Queen’s reign of terror. The all-star cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and Crispin Glover. The screenplay is by Linda Woolverton.

This film has been rated PG.

The Esquire IMAX Theatre is located at 1211 K Street in downtown Sacramento. For information on tickets and showtimes, call 443-IMAX (4629) or visit the Web site at www.imax.com/sacramento.

Cute office humor....

A co-worker just forwarded this to me.

Subject: Window Replacement

Last year I replaced all the windows in my house with that expensive double-pane energy efficient kind, and today, I got a call from the contractor who installed them. He was complaining that the work had been completed a whole year ago and I still hadn't paid for them.
Helllooo,............just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid.
So, I told him just what his fast talking sales guy had told me last year, that in ONE YEAR these windows would pay for themselves!
Helllooooo? It's been a year! I told him.
There was only silence at the other end of the line, so I finally just hung up.
He never called back. I bet he felt like an idiot.

That is exactly what I think when I hear those silly sales pitches claiming that some product "will pay for itself"!!
